What does it mean to be a volunteer?

Volunteering is a basic component of the civil society. It puts into practice the noblest aspirations of human kind-the wish (need) for peace, freedom, equal chances, safety and justice for everyone. In this epoch of globalization and permanent change, the world becomes smaller and smaller, more inter-independent and more complex.

Volunteering- both in individual and group actions- is a way in which:

  • Human values regarding community and care for the other can be promoted and strengthened
  • People can exercise their rights and responsibilities as society members, while evolving and learning in the course of life, becoming conscious of their entire human potential
  • Useful connections may be created for overcoming the differences which separate us, so that we should live together in strongly linked communities, working together for finding new solutions to our common challenges and to mould our collective destines.

At the dawn of a new millennium, volunteering is an essential component of every society. It efficiently puts into practice the UN declaration according to which "We have the power to change the world".

This declaration supports the right of every woman, every man and child to freely associate and be volunteers, no matter his/her cultural and ethnical origin, religion, age, sex, physical, social or economic condition. Everyone should have the right to use his free time, talent and energy for the benefit of other persons or their community by means of individual or collective actions, without waiting for any financial compensation.
